Marianela de la Hoz

Marianela De La Hoz (born 14 June, 1956)

Born in Mexio City in 1956, Marianela De La Hoz attended Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana where she graduated in 1978 with a degree in graphic design. After working in the field of design for a number of years the artist swapped her computer for a paint brush and began to pursue a career as a plastic artist.

Now Marianela, is known for her often miniature, highly detailed paintings, often depicting the “dark side“ of humanity. Marianela uses the almost forgotten technique of egg tempera, which was the primary medium of painting before oil painting was invented in the medieval era. Egg tempera painting can be traced back to ancient Egypt and consists of pigments mixed with egg yolk (which is used as the binding material).

Marianela De La Hoz has exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, including countries such as: Mexico, United States, Canada, Germany, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates.

For many, Marianela is seen as an artist who has picked up the torch from world renowned female surrealists such as Frida Kahlo, Leonora Carrington, and Remedios Varro.
