Rafael Coronel
Rafael Coronel was a Mexican painter and printmaker born on July 24, 1931, in Zacatecas, Mexico. He studied art in Mexico City and Europe and was part of the "Rupture Generation" of Mexican artists (the movement following the great Mexican muralists).
Coronel's style was a fusion of Mexican and European influences, and he was known for depicting the human figure in bold colors and dramatic compositions. His work was often inspired by Mexican folklore and mythology.
Rafael Coronel's works have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, and the Palacio de Bellas Artes (also in Mexico City).
During his career Coronel received many awards and accolades for his contributions to Mexican art, including the National Prize for Arts and Sciences in 1992.
Rafael Coronel died on May 7, 2019 in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
