Alejandro Santiago

Alejandro Santiago Ramírez (22 April, 1964 – 22 July, 2013)

Born in Teococuilco de Marcos Perrez in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, Alejandro Santiago was a painter, printmaker and sculptor, best known for his 2501 Migrantes project.

At a young age the artist showcased with Mexican giants such as Rufino Tamayo and Francisco Toledo. In his mid 20’s, Bond Latin Gallery began to represent Santiago, showcasing his work for the first time in the United States.

Along side Quetzalli Gallery in Oaxaca City, Bond Latin Gallery helped fund and promote the artist’s most important body of work, the 2501 Migrantes project, where the artist spent a decade creating 2,501 life size ceramic sculptures to repopulate his home village, which had practically been deserted (while the artist was living and working in the United States and Europe) as a result of globalization.
